Using Literacy Circles to deepen students understanding and engagement with texts.
Yr5-8
Breakout 1: 10:30-10:55am
In Literacy Circles small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. Each member of the group responds to a particular feature and shares their learning with the group.
Literacy circles provide students with opportunities to engage in critical thinking and reflecting as they read, discuss, and respond to books. By working together to share their understandings each student brings a range of opinions and viewpoints to the discussion. Group members become active listeners and readers, looking closely at texts in order to add to their understanding and construct meaning with other readers.

Mindfulness: a smart way of working
Breakout 1: 10:30-10:55am
Mindfulness is our natural ability to be fully present. It’s the kind of engagement necessary if we want to bring all our capabilities to the moment. It’s a tool for increasing the strength and quality of our attention and assists us to stay focussed and clear minded rather than getting lost in distractions and stress. In the workplace and with the complex demands of the digital age, it gives us a way to organise, protect and make best use of our minds and prevent them from getting cluttered. Being mindful is a smart way of working and is also good for our health.

Spirituality in Education
Breakout 2 : 11:00-11:25am
This workshop will include an insight into Catholic spirituality in the provision for children, preparing them in their faith formation. Based upon the gospel values chosen by the school community St Joseph's endeavours to provide deeper understandings so as to enhance not only the faith formation of the students but also the lifelong learning pathways of each student. In using the metaphors of bible scripture we are able to create visual pathways for the students to imagine their presence within these. Mindfulness to us is imaginative prayer.

Agile Learning
Breakout 3: 1:00-1:20pm
‘Agile’ refers to a project management style popular in software development that encourages collaboration, sets clear goals, and works in short ‘sprints’ of work with regular meetings to ensure that team members meet those goals. The Agile style can be applied to teaching and learning situations in ways that let students work together in groups, let those groups work together, allow for differentiated learning, and let teachers gather student voice automatically through normal teaching acts. This presentation explores research on the Agile style of project management in educational settings and how this collaborative approach between teachers and students corresponds well with culturally-responsive pedagogical practices, facilitates modern collaborative learning cultures, and mirrors the spiral of inquiry.

Te Ara Whakamana: Mana Enhancement
Breakout 3: 1:00-1:20pm
By building on the strengths of the individual and improving their emotional literacy we can enhance their mana, and help them achieve their aspirations and potential.
Te Ara Whakamana: Mana Enhancement is a tool that all teachers can use to help their learners better understand themselves and create strategies and plans for better outcomes in their lives.
Based on the imagery and stories of the Māori Creation story, this tool uses a multi-dimensional approach - imagery, metaphors, shapes and colours- to help learners develop self awareness, self regulation and communication that will lead to positive behaviour changes.
To see their greatness
To notice their strengths
To identify their inherited traits
To value their gifts
To believe in their worth
….is to enhance their mana.
